Joe Tilson RA (b1928)
Printmaker, painter and sculptor, a leading light in British Pop Art. Tilson studied at St Martin’s and the Royal College of Art along with Peter Blake, R B Kitaj and David Hockney and where he received the Rome Prize. He returned after a year to teach at St Martin’s followed by the Slade School, UCL and the Visual Arts School, New York. In 1961 he exhibited at the Paris Biennale. His first solo show was in 1962 at the Marlborough Gallery. He gained international acclaim after the Venice biennale in 1964 and has exhibited regularly ever since.
