The Turquoise Vase

William Tillyer (b1938)

Large woodcut in 7 colours on Japan paper from the York Vases series (published by Bernard Jacobsen in 1981)

Signed in green pencil and numbered from the edition of 100 on the backing sheet of wove paper onto which the woodcut is loosely mounted at the corners.

Tillyer produced many works with ‘still life’ as their theme, particularly vases of flowers, but he was more interested in breaking down the image and reinvigorating it rather than creating a ‘cliched’ image. We see the vase of flowers and we see the juxtaposition and framing of diagonal strokes around it.

Measurements: 92 x 74 cm image size, backing sheet size 106 x 75.5 cm

Condition: Photographed behind perspex glazing, woodcut appears in very good condition. The mounting sheet also in very good condition, some possible light time toning to the edges of the backing sheet will be noticeable on deframing for shipping (very minor). It can be collected framed.
