The Picasso Vase

William Tillyer (b1938)

Large woodcut in 7 colours on Japan paper from the York Vases series (published by Bernard Jacobsen in 1981)

Signed in red pencil and numbered 57 from the edition of 100 on the backing sheet of wove paper onto which the woodcut is loosely mounted at the corners.

Provenance: ex Business Academy Galleries, Royal Academy of Arts (became Curwen Gallery) – photo of label shown which was on the back of the broken frame – we will not be able to ship the label.

Tillyer produced many works with ‘still life’ as their theme, particularly vases of flowers, but he was more interested in breaking down the image and reinvigorating it rather than creating a ‘cliched’ image. We see the vase of flowers and we see the juxtaposition and framing of diagonal strokes around it.

Measurements: 92 x 74 cm image size, backing sheet size 106 x 75.5 cm

Condition: Photographed behind glass, woodcut appears in very good condition. The mounting sheet also in very good condition, some occasional light handling 'creases' to the margin, light time toning to the edges of the sheet (all very minor). but the frame has some wear and a loose backboard.
