Sybil in her Dressing Room

Jim Dine RA (b1935)

A vintage 1968 Jim Dine Limited Edition Lithograph on paper which is in many museum collections worldwide.  This is a rare work and a real collector’s piece that we are delighted to be offering.

From “The Picture of Dorian Gray Series”, one of Dine’s most important illustrative works, this one is Sybil in her Dressing Room.

Signed in pencil lower right and numbered on the back in black ink 103/200.

The lithographs and etchings for the series were prepared on zinc and aluminium plates by the artist at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham in February 1968 and subsequently printed on Velin Arches paper at the Atelier Desjobert and Atelier Leblanc, Paris. Published by Petersburg Press, London;

About the work:

Dine designed the costumes for the unrealised play The Picture of Dorian Gray.  When the play failed to materialise, it was suggested to Dine that he publish his designs in print format.

Pictured in this lithograph is Sybil Vane, the innocent yet glamorous actress and object of Dorian Gray’s affection and obsession in Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. The blonde woman is drawn in sheer white lingerie against a wash of colour. Fine black lines trace the edge of her garments and delineates the highlights on her hair and body.

Measurements: 17 1/2 × 12 in | 44.5 × 30.5 cm

Condition: It should be of course borne in mind that this work is some 55 years old and has been displayed so it will show signs of its age.  Photographed in what we believe could be its original wooden frame with worn silver gilt, we removed the work to check for the numbering on the back of the sheet. The lithograph has been hingemounted and will easily lift off its mount. Some light aging of the paper tone which is not by any means distracting as it is even in nature overall, with a very slight whiter line area towards to the top left diagonal of the sheet which is very hard to make out.  There is a further smokey grey discolouration to the corner top left, unclear what has caused this. No foxing or damage to the sheet.
