Ivy, Falmouth, Cornwall
Ivy, Falmouth, CornwallA rare and large woodcut but the much sought after Philip Sutton RA dating from 1968
We cannot find another of these elsewhere, so it was perhaps not editioned. This is an artist proof, signed and dated 1968, titled ‘Ive, Falmouth, Cornwall’. ‘Ive’ is we believe short for Ivy, one of his daughters and the subject of another print we have found online called Ivy, with the same green eyes and black hair.
It is dedicated in pencil lower left to Francis & Liz Hewlett from Philip Sutton May 1968. Francis Hewlett who died in 2012 was the former head of painting at Falmouth school of art, Liz his wife. Francis and Philip were students together at the Slade school of art in the 1950s, studying under William Coldstream.
Measurements: The image is a large 45 x 45.5 cm, sheet 85 x 67 cm; printed on a soft paper.
Condition: Image overall in excellent condition, a small colourless wrinkle in the pink to the lower left, minor; some minor tip damage to the top right and left corners of the sheet; a couple of pin holes to corner tips; some very faint discolouration, hard to see, towards the bottom of the sheet. Overall a fantastic and striking print which will look great in a new frame.
