Michael Sandle RA (b1936)
Born on the Isle of Man, Professor Michael Sandle studied at Douglas School of Art and Technology, and the Slade School of Fine Art. He spent some time in Germany in the 70s and 80s taking up teaching posts as Professor of Sculpture. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1994.
He has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in Britain and internationally including the 5th Paris Biennale, 4th and 6th Documenta and Sao Paulo Biennale. Widely recognised as one of the finest sculptors in the world, and a renowned draughtsman and printmaker.
His work criticises capitalism, the media, and most importantly highlights the destructiveness of war, with mortality often the underlying subtle theme.
