Wildcat

John Bellany RA, CBE (1942-2013)

Original limited edition etching with aquatint by the late John Bellany, called Wildcat

In super condition, signed in pencil and numbered 35/50.  The work dates from 1986 and was one of 3 images created by Bellany for the Scottish Bestiary – a book of poems and prose by George Mackay Brown published in 1986 that featured 20 prints of birds and animals by seven Scottish artists.

Bellany has mischievously depicted the wild cat in human rather than feline form. She appears to be clutching an hourglass, maybe a signifier for mortality, one of the artist’s constant preoccupations.

Does not appear to have been previously framed.

Collections: national galleries of scotland; British Council; Arts Council

Measurements: 45.6 x 29.6 cm plate size on sheet with full margins.
