Signed and numbered 71/75 in pencil, this work is called Virgil in his Study.
The image shows Virgil poised over the book of his Works, his face without features because no authoritative likeness exists, but lent Tom Phillips’s hands, drawn from life. (source Tom Phillip’s website). This is one from the set of nine screenprints published by Waddingtons, selected from 138 illustrations by Phillips to accompany his translation of Dante’s Inferno.
Provenance: acquired from the corporate art collection of ExxonMobil.
Measurements: image size 39 x 50 cm, sheet size 76.5 x 54.5 cm approx
Condition: Photographed in its frame with mount and Perspex frontage, the print appears visibly in excellent condition
