The Urn (from the Monuments Series)

Ivor Abrahams RA (1935-2015)

Large screenprint with varnishing and embossing from the Monuments Series.

The urn sculpture, whose colours suggest how time has worn it away, is embossed onto the print and varnished giving a lift to the central focus of the image and a beautiful finish to the work.

Signed in pencil and titled 78.  Denoted p/p for printers proof.

Monuments was a suite of three screenprints on wove paper, printed by Chris Betambeau at Advanced Graphics and published by Bernard Jacobson Ltd in an edition of 100.  They can be found in the print collection of the Tate. This suite represented a turning point in Abrahams’ career, moving away from his garden themes back towards figurative work.  Sombre in mood and tone, the prints reflected a difficult period in his life where he was challenged by critics and collectors for moving away from the garden imagery for which he was well known.

Measurements: 46 X 68 cm image size, sheet size 69 x 101 cm

Condition: Very good condition, some light time toning to the sheet edges and a couple of occasional light marks to the margins, minor, unframed.
