The Metallization of a Dream (2)

Sir Eduardo Paolozzi CBE, RA (1924-2005)

Rare untitled lithograph in colours from 1963.  Signed in pencil and dated 1963 beneath the image. Aside from the limited edition of 400, which took the format of a book called The Metallization of a Dream, this is a stand alone print – there is nothing on the reverse of the sheet.

This was one of the images in the 63 page The Metallization of a Dream published by the Lion & Unicorn Press (the Private Press of the Royal College of Art) as an edition of 400. The publication, very hard to find, set out to showcase many of Paolozzi’s early and so called ‘chaotic’ works and has been described as being one of the best showcases of his genius.

The Metallization of a Dream was a collaborative work between Paolozzi and his friend, the curator Lawrence Alloway (who later became curator of the Guggenheim Museum), who was also a fellow member of the Independent Group in the 1950s.  With Paolozzi’s assistance, it was produced by RCA student John Munday with commentary by Lawrence Alloway.  A copy is in the British Museum.
The Metallization of a Dream’s title is taken from a statement that Paolozzi made in 1961 while teaching in Hamburg — “The search for arch-types to aid the metallisation of the dream.” The phrase also became the title of a large screenprint produced in 1963.
