Sir Roy Calne (the liver transplant)

John Bellany RA, CBE (1942-2013)

Large etching, signed in pencil and numbered from the edition of 30.

Dating from 1988/9 after the eminent surgeon performed a life saving liver transplant on the artist.  Blindstamped lower right.

Following years of abuse through alcohol, Bellany’s liver was fast deteriorating. Against all the odds he underwent a transplant in 1988 which was highly successful.  When the artist came to, he couldn’t believe he was still alive and asked for a pencil and paper to draw, to make sure that he was!  During his post op recovery he drew the doctors and nurses looking after him and in this powerful image he shows Professor Sir Roy Calne carrying out the surgery on himself.
