Ranchos de Taos

Paul Hogarth OBE, RA (1917-2001)

Striking original lithograph by the late Paul Hogarth of Ranchos de Taos.

Signed in pencil, and titled, numbered 48/80 in pencil. Blind stamped. Ranchos de Taos depicts the Old Adobe Mission set against the distant San Juan Mountains.

Printed by Stanley Jones at Curwen Press. Paul Hogarth had a long association with Curwen Press and Stanley Jones.  He drew his early prints onto grained zinc plates but later adapted to the method of drawing on transfer film, painting each colour separation required before making into printing plates. He did not like to overlap colours and this gives his lithographs their distinctive vibrant look. He loved to travel and produced many lithographs reflecting his journeys.

Ranchos de Taos is one from a series of prints created through the 1990s inspired by his extensive travels in the footsteps of DH Lawrence and Lawrence Durrell and sought to capture the feelings of the times that the two authors were experiencing whilst in the different locations. Hogarth breathes life into familiar images with his unique and spirited approach to colour and form.
