Raised Beach

John Bellany CBE (1942-2013)

Large etching, signed in pencil and numbered from the edition of 45.

Dating from 1982.  Blindstamped lower right.

In this self portrait, the artist is buried up to his neck in pebbles on a beach, with the sea appearing to surround him, and he has a feeding tube attached to his nose.  Many of his etchings during this period reflected what appeared to be his suffering and the inevitability of his own death as a result of his long battle with alcoholism.

Measurements: 46 x 40 cm image size
