Prisonniers Sovietiques 1941

Ronald Brooks Kitaj RA (1932-2007)

Rare limited edition screenprint with photo screenprint another of which is in the British Museum collection.  Signed and numbered 37/40 in pencil.  Printed at Kelpra Studios in 1964.

Three rows of images, first row of photographic portraits of Red Army prisoners from a German propaganda film, text beneath reads ‘Prisonniers sovietiques 1941 – photos de propaganda allemandes…’, which translates as Soviet Prisonners 1941, German propaganda photos.  second row images of cliffs, third row various ‘portraits’ (reproductions of drawings by the artist) with texts beneath each one.

It should be remembered that at the time this was made, screenprinting was a very expensive medium.

Measurements: 58 x 91 cm sheet size

Condition: Unframed, overall in very good condition, very fresh and clean, the only observations some minor edge tears of a few mm in a couple of places, very small, and a crease lower left corner tip.  There is some faint show through in the corners from old mount tape verso.
