Melon Stall

Richard Beer (1928-2017)

A quirky limited edition etching with aquatint called Melon Stall, from Richard Beer’s own personal collection of prints.

Signed, titled and numbered from the edition of 70, this work captures the atmosphere of an Italian village market stall, with 100 Lira price board and warm colours.  The artist has made great use of colour in this work, keeping the people and buildings a muted brown and white leaving the green melons to stand out along with the clear blue sky and pink sign. We cannot find this print referenced anywhere else.

Beer spent many holidays travelling through southern Europe where he sketched, drew and painted landscapes, architecture and street scenes as inspiration for his etchings and paintings which he would complete on his return to his Primrose hill home and studio.

Provenance: from the estate sale of the late Richard Beer
