Lecce ii (Watercolour / Ink)

Richard Beer (1928-2017)

An original large painting in watercolour and ink on tissue paper from Richard Beer’s own personal collection.

Showing the artist’s talent at its best, his ability to capture architecture in superb detail jumps out at the viewer from the tissue paper on which it is painted on. The warm tones of the watercolour wash evoke the atmosphere of Southern Italy. The subject is the façade of the baroque cathedral of Lecce in Puglia, southern Italy.

Signed in black ink lower right, the work has been mounted with a sheet of paper loosely behind, on which it is titled Lecce ii. We will carefully detach and roll the painting on the tissue sheet, together with the backing sheet.

Beer spent many holidays travelling through southern Europe where he sketched, drew and painted landscapes, architecture and street scenes as inspiration for his etchings and paintings which he would complete on his return to his Primrose hill home and studio.

Provenance: from the estate sale of the late Richard Beer

Measurements: 56 x 36cm

Condition: excellent condition, I have observed a tiny pin prick to the upper left of the sheet on close scrutiny, but is very minor. No date on this work but would say 1970s or thereabouts as there is some time toning to the cardboard mount.
