Lava Quarries Etna (1950)

Julian Trevelyan RA (1910-1988)

An early and very rare Trevelyan lithograph (a stone lithograph) which we have been unable to find elsewhere.

This is an edition of just 20 copies, signed in pencil and numbered 19/20.  Printed on handmade watermarked paper in 5 colours.

Trevelyan visited Sicily with Mary Fedden in 1949 after the breakdown of his first marriage and it is here that they fell in love, travelling over the island for two months.  This print, titled Lava Quarries Etna, is not dated but comes with its original gallery label from the Redfern Gallery, hand-typed, titling the work, and dating the purchase of it (to a T W Southam ESQ) as October 10th 1952.  The print was therefore produced around 1949-52.

Measurements: Sheet 51 x 64 cm, unframed.

Condition: Overall in very nice condition, clean, on soft paper with occasional light handling creases / light creases consistent with handmade paper. Residual mount tape marks visible verso but not from the front.
