Kew Gardens (ink & watercolour)
Richard Beer (1928-2017)A stunning large original watercolour and ink study of the Temperate Glasshouse at the world famous Kew Gardens in London, one of two studies for sale of this same subject.
This one is signed in pencil lower right. It captures in amazing detail the architecture of the glass house quite beautifully, really showing the artists skill as a draughtsman. In the foreground, typical of Beer, it is largely bare, but has a lone pigeon eyeing up some pieces of bread which presumably have been thrown by the artist.. In pencil in the margin he has written ‘morning picnic with Val’ and the date Kew, July 22 in pencil. He has also written a quote “you must have a structural environment, she said” which is perhaps a bit of advice given to him by Val! Quite comical!
It has come from a large collection of original sketches and drawings that the artist made whilst on his travels around Europe, often as preparatory studies for his etchings or paintings. This is one of the few originals with an English landscape! A copy of the auction receipt will be provided.
