Illiers, Hotel de la gare
Richard Beer (1928-2017)Lovely etching with aquatint of the Hotel de la Gare in Illiers-Combray – a commune in the Eure-et-Loir department in north central France.
Beer spent many holidays travelling through France, sketching and painting and then producing etchings in his own studio on return to London.
This composition is really striking with Beer’s draughtsmanship shining through. Great detail on the building with its quaint shutters and facade, with trees in the foreground. The image is in black with tones of blue in the sky and sign and pale yellow on the building.
It is titled Illiers, numbered from the edition of 70 and signed in pencil beneath the plate.
Purchased from a private collector.
Measurements: 42.5 x 34.5 cm plate size
Condition: Excellent condition, it has previously been framed with the faintest trace of where the previous mount touched the paper, barely discernible. Note some natural rusty deposits from the printing plate engrained in the plate outline itself.
