Hackney Empire Pencil Drawing

Richard Beer (1928-2017)

An original detailed drawing in pencil of Hackney Empire showing the ornate Circle and booths and suberb internal architecture.  Completed over two sheets of paper which have been seamlessly joined.

The drawing is unsigned, but dated Tuesday Mar 26.  Richard Beer went on to produce etchings and paintings of the interior of Hackney Empire so this is likely a preparatory drawing that he made ‘in situ’ as part of his research.  It has come from the late artist’s personal collection.

One of his first earners as an artist was designing stage sets for the theatre, and throughout his life, Beer was inspired by the grandeur of architecture.

Provenance: from the estate sale of the late Richard Beer

Measurements: 61.5 x 51 cm sheet size
