Dancing Costers
Ceri Richards CBE (1903-1971)Limited edition lithograph from 1952, Dancing Costers (catalogue Raisonee Sanesi 22).
Signed in pencil, numbered from the edition of 100, dated Oct 52. Printed on wove paper, published by the Royal College of Art as part of the Coronation Series.
The Coronation series consisted of 40 prints by 36 artists commissioned to record the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II; the works were printed at the Royal College of Art in London and were exhibited at the Redfern Gallery from April – May, 1953.
Although most of the prints are now held in Government collections, the folio as a collection is not well known. It is ironic that it happens to showcase some of the best British printmakers of the mid 20th century including William Scott, Edward Bawden, Michael Rothenstein, Julian Trevelyan and of course Ceri Richards among others.
