Casalta (Siena)

Richard Beer (1928-2017)

A large unsigned etching of an Italian farmhouse with roaming goat and duck in the yard, from Richard Beer’s own personal collection of prints.

Not sure if this work was ever editioned as we cannot find it referenced anywhere.  It is titled in pencil Casalta (which is near Siena, Italy) and we have remarkably found a painting of almost exactly the same scene, but with a different placement of the goat and the figure, which was sold at an exhibition of the artist’s prints and paintings at Abbott & Holder gallery in 2016. Click here and scroll down the page to view the oil painting on the left (number 7).  The painting dates from 1975 and features ‘Barbi the goat’!

Beer spent many holidays travelling through southern Europe where he sketched, drew and painted landscapes, architecture and street scenes as inspiration for his etchings and paintings which he would complete on his return to his Primrose hill home and studio.

Provenance: from the estate sale of the late Richard Beer
