14 Lithographs – Edmund Burke Suite
Ivor Abrahams RA (1935-2015)14 of the 15 Lithographs from Ivor Abraham’s Edmund Burke Suite.
Collections: The Tate
Printed in 1978 on Crisbrook wove paper by Alan Cox at Sky Editions and published by Bernard Jacobson Ltd in an edition of 100 in 1978; signed by the artist in 1979.
These works are Unsigned, but bear the blindstamp of Sky Editions. They have come from a studio sale of the late Alan Cox, Sky Editions, so these were the copies that his studio retained from the edition.
The works were inspired by Edmund Burke’s A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origins of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, first published in 1757. The artist was invited by Bernard Jacobson to make a second portfolio following the success of his Poe suite. He had long been an admirer of Edmund Burke’s text and was pleased to have the chance to work with it as, he felt, it ‘lent itself very much to visual interpretation’. (source: the Tate)
According to the information on the Tate website, the themes of power and terror found in the Burke texts were important stimuli in the artist’s choice of imagery.
