Stanley William Hayter CBE (1901-88)
British painter and outstanding printmaker who spent most of his life in Paris. A trained chemist, his scientific knowledge no doubt inspired the innovative techniques which he brought to printmaking, specifically the art of etching. He founded the Atelier 17 print workshop in 1927 which enabled hundreds of artists – many of the leading names in printmaking – to experiment, learn and innovate in the field of printmaking. During World War 2 he took his workshop to New York before later moving back to Paris. Without doubt no other British artist has had as significant an impact on printmaking on the world stage than Hayter.
