Philip Sutton RA (b1928)
Born in Poole in 1928, Philip Sutton RA is a painter, printmaker, ceramicist and teacher known for his use of bright colours. He studied at the Slade School (1948-53), winning scholarships that he used to travel in Europe. He taught at the Slade until 1963 before going travelling to Fiji and Australia to paint. In 1956 he was elected a member of the London Group and held his first solo exhibition. In 1977 the Royal Academy held a retrospective show and in 1989 he was elected a full member of the RA.
