Alvar Sunol (b1935)
Spanish born artist Alvar studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Jorge in Barcelona and won a painting competition a year later which still hangs today in the permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona. He had his first solo show in 1957 in Barcelona which was a resounding success and in 1959 he went on a scholarship to study in Paris.
Represented by the prestigious Galerie Drouant, his first paintings sold out in a week. He was subsequently invited to join the ‘salon de Paris’.
In 1962, the Monede Gallery in New York showed Alvar’s work in his first exhibition in the United States. Alvar produced his first original lithographs for a one-man show at Gallery Drouant in 1963
Alvar works in watercolour, oil, ceramics, sculpture and lithography. He has works in galleries and museums throughout the United States, Europe and Japan.
