Grand Hotel Oloffson

Paul Hogarth OBE, RA (1917-2001)

Lithograph from 1988 printed by Stanley Jones at Curwen Press.  Signed and titled in pencil, numbered from the edition of 195.

Hotel Oloffson is an inn in central Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Built in the late 19th century as a private home, it was turned into a hotel in 1935, and became known for the many artists and celebrities who stayed there. The hotel was the real-life inspiration for the fictional Hotel Trianon in Graham Greene’s 1966 novel The Comedians.

Printed by Stanley Jones at Curwen Press. Paul Hogarth had a long association with Curwen Press and Stanley Jones.  He drew his early prints onto grained zinc plates but later adapted to the method of drawing on transfer film, painting each colour separation required before making into printing plates. He did not like to overlap colours and this gives his lithographs their distinctive vibrant look.

This is one from a series of prints created through the 1990s inspired by his extensive travels in the footsteps of DH Lawrence and Lawrence Durrell and sought to capture the feelings of the times that the two authors were experiencing whilst in the different locations. Hogarth breathes life into familiar images with his unique and spirited approach to colour and form.
