The Capercaillie Sings His Lament
John Bellany RA, CBE (1942-2013)Original limited edition etching with aquatint by the late John Bellany, called The Capercaillie Sings His Lament
In super condition, signed in pencil and numbered 34/50. The work dates from 1986 and was one of 3 images created by Bellany for the Scottish Bestiary – a book of poems and prose by George Mackay Brown published in 1986 that featured 20 prints of birds and animals by seven Scottish artists. This image was commissioned to illustrate The Grouse; Bellany opted to depict the capercallie, which is a very large – and increasingly endangered member of the grouse family. The image also represents a lament over the death of his second wife, Juliet.
